Prologue

The place Barry and I were to name “ChaliceStream” was purchased by my grandparents in 1944 and served them in their retirement as an 80-acre hobby farm.  My parents brought me there every summer to visit and to enjoy life in the out-of-doors, where the air was cleaner than what we breathed in Chicago.  I loved being there.  In fact, the “farm,” as we called it then, is featured in most of my childhood memories.

During those summers, I spent many pleasurable hours on a swing that hung from the branches of two close-standing white pines.  As if the 400 miles which separated me from my home in Chicago wasn’t far enough, I pumped high into the air, flying farther away from all the grime of the city and meanness of the schoolyard.

Many years later, when Barry and I founded ChaliceStream on the site of my childhood retreat to be a refuge for the wayfarer from the mean-spiritedness of our times, a place to share visions and hopes and to grow through the art of dance, the ghost of the child was still haunting the branches of the pines, smiling to see himself in the man who had laid claim to the place of his dreams.
